PLOT
After his wife died, Raimund Balsam finds himself a single father living with his 12-year-old son Paul. Making appearances as a magician, Raimund is able to earn a little extra money for the family while trying to be a loving father to his son. But afflicted with self-pity and mourning, he manages this only to a limited extent, categorically rejecting every offer of help from the outside, particularly from his sister-in-law Antonia.PRESS
“The director Claudia Garde’s greatest concern was keeping the mawkishnessg out of the story. Hence Raimund Balsam is allowed to demonstrate a number of unattractive qualities along with the moving ones. Claudia Garde’s see’s his basic problem so: "A person’s mourning of a loved one demands our respect. But when this mourning exceeds a certain point, the person becomes a problem for his surroundings.” SATUNDKABEL.DE“A loser as hero – courageous of NDR to try that. Matthias Brandt was perfectly cast for the role. It is wonderful how the magical finale & subtle metaphors conjure up a bit of poetry amongst the difficulties of everyday life.”
