PLOT
Dr. Martin Helling (Axel Milberg) had envisioned his arrival in Neuharlingersiel differently: The doctor’s office is in total chaos: the medical equipment is out of date and Melanie (Henny Reents), the young “assistant” of his deceased predecessor, could not be more incompetent and impertinent. After a traumatic experience led Martin Helling, Berlin’s most well-known specialist in vascular medicine, to quit his career, he thought it would be a nice to work as a country doctor in the sleepy town where he had spent his holidays with Aunt Alma (Ellen Schwiers) as a child. But these are not the only complications he encounters. Although he is brilliant in his field, Martin Helling completely lacks the skills needed in dealing with people. The newcomer offers the cranky townspeople with their minor quirks good medical advice, but as soon as they need their hand held or a bit of encouragement, the doctor reacts awkwardly, sometimes even defiantly. The man has a heart, but he doesn’t know it yet. After all those years working in an impersonal clinic, this organ, shy and neglected, has withdrawn into its innermost depths – a fact that doesn’t make doctor-patient relations any easier.
